If you take a close look at the thousands of employees entering the Har Hotzvim High-Tech Park, you may not be able to distinguish them, but dozens, if not hundreds, of these employees are still students attending school. Students of engineering, computer science, bio-tech and electronics are snatched up by companies for part-time or half-time positions. The students enjoy real work in their future profession and do not have to work as waiters or in regular student jobs. They gain experience in their field of study and open up an opportunity to work in the same company full-time upon graduation. The companies benefit from a young, ambitious and original workforce, cheaper than a regular employee (at least during the study phase) and from the ability to raise the next generation of the company. They can also experiment with the same employee, just before they commit to a full employment contract with him. In large companies such as Intel and Teva, which have large centers in the Har Hotzvim High-Tech Park, the employment of students is already a tradition that has proven itself. <\/p>\n
Close ties between industry and academia are required to match the right student to the right workplace. Employment fairs at universities and colleges attract Har Hotzvim High-Tech Park companies in search of suitable personnel. <\/p>\n
New initiatives are born to enable this mutual feeding: for example, the “New Spirit” association and the Jerusalem Development Authority have created and conceived a procedure to encourage Jerusalem companies to employ students in their final year of study. According to the procedure, a bio-med\/high-tech company that chooses to employ a Jerusalem student in the last year of a bachelor’s\/master’s degree will be entitled to participate in the cost of his monthly salary at the rate of 50% up to NIS 2,000. This money will come from the Jerusalem Development Authority and is an incentive for companies to employ and train students. The scope of the student’s position will not exceed 25 hours per week. If the company decides to employ the student after 6-9 months for a minimum of 80% of the position, the company will be entitled to an additional grant of NIS 10,000. <\/p>\n
We went out and checked with the institutions that deal with technological higher education, which Jerusalem is rich in, with the companies themselves and with the “New Spirit” association the possibilities: where is it worth studying? How do you integrate into the industry and what should students know before? <\/p>\n
<\/strong><\/p>\n Recommend students with whom they have in-depth knowledge: The “New Spirit” association <\/strong><\/p>\n The “New Spirit” association – which was established to prevent the large negative migration from Jerusalem – works tirelessly on a variety of projects to help students integrate into the high-tech industry in Jerusalem and into employment in the city in general. The association’s message is “to gain experience in the field of study while studying for a degree,” whether through various projects or by applying for student positions, which the association tries to find for the students. This is based on the view that gaining experience will help students get a job in their field of study, which usually requires experience, more easily. <\/p>\n One of the main projects is the Employment Project<\/strong>: “New Spirit” works to help Jerusalem students and academics find work and also helps Jerusalem employers recruit quality employees and interns. The project is already operating successfully in Tel Aviv and now the association is working with Jerusalem companies and other bodies in the city to adapt the project to the needs of the Jerusalem industry. The association is interested in meeting with as many high-tech companies as possible that operate in the city and in the Har Hotzvim High-Tech Park and hearing about their needs in the field of human resources. <\/p>\n Another project, called the Interns Project<\/strong>, includes a wide range of internship tracks in the fields of high-tech, biomed, design, human resources, government and policy, and more.<\/p>\n The project was established with the aim of exposing the world of employment in Jerusalem to the student and graduate population studying and living in the city. This exposure enables the acquisition of employment experience with leading employers in the city on the one hand, and helps students to be exposed to and integrate into the unique urban fabric of the city on the other. The project has been operating for five years and so far over 400 interns have taken part in it.
