\"biomimicry\"<\/a>Until today, we have become accustomed to the fact that nature and the economy clash. Economic growth comes to some extent at the expense of harming nature, while technology people are perceived as alienated from the values of nature. Will the next generation car not pollute the environment at all? Not sure, but it could very well be that many engineers will spend extra hours watching National Geographic. <\/p>\n

Of all the lecturers who could have opened the huge conference attended by thousands of senior technology people in Europe, a researcher in the field of biology was chosen to present her philosophy. Janice Benyus, who defines herself as a “nature geek,” revealed to the engineers the world of Biomimicry \u2013 the desire to learn from 3.8 billion years of evolution and survival of nature. <\/p>\n

“At this point, where the earth is unable to absorb our mistakes and unable to support the expected expansion, we must find a better way to live here. Your businesses are starting to think about sustainability, sustainability planning, how to cut down on the use of materials, how to reduce waste. It doesn’t matter what industry you are in. This is something that all organisms in the world go through \u2013 including businesses,” Janice addressed the engineers.<\/p>\n

She places the responsibility on the engineers when she tells them: “Our job is to redesign everything. For this purpose, we have 3.8 billion years of world development at our disposal. Nature is a method that works, and it is full of technological innovation. This is the environment in which innovative people look to for ideas.”<\/p>\n

Janice helps convey to the engineers who spend their time on the development boards things that are clear to every nature lover. “Nature helps you think differently,” she says, “it thinks differently, it has already thought about how to do things with minimal energy.” And as a wonderful example, she presents a picture of a zebra, which is a perfect cooling unit. Since the white stripes are cooler than the black ones, there is a passage of air \u2013 a natural fan in the middle of the savannah, even on windless days. <\/p>\n

When it comes to efficient use of energy, nature is much more efficient than any means we have, even when it comes to wind turbines designed to generate electricity cleanly. When engineers watched schools of swimming fish, they identified that when fish swim in a school, the front fish move in a circular motion that creates a vortex that allows the fish behind to swim more easily. According to this movement, they changed the traditional design of wind turbines that was considered the most efficient, and brought the wings closer to each other to create an easier movement similar to a school of fish. <\/p>\n

Marine scientists knew that whales catch their food by means of a circle of bubbles that they exhale, and then swallow the bubbles together with the food trapped in them. When engineers first observed this phenomenon, they began to develop a new fishing method that is in advanced stages of development, and which will prevent the capture of dolphins and other animals in the bubble net. <\/p>\n

Other examples brought by Janice include collecting water in buildings similar to a desert beetle with grooves that channel dew from its back to its mouth, distributing heat similarly to what occurs in termite mounds in Africa, or using glands similar to those on the lotus plant to keep buildings clean using rainwater only (already in active use in Europe). It is very possible that your next computer screens will be based on the way the peacock produces its colors. In the dark, the peacock is a brown creature, but transparent layers on its wings create the colors by refracting light. Adopting this technique will allow creating screens the thickness of a page that require almost no energy. <\/p>\n

There are thousands of examples, all of which Janice has collected on the website AskNature.com. But her message is more important than the colorful examples \u2013 the world is changing, and we need to look specifically at the nature we are harming in order to learn things correctly, and the desert beetle or the sea shark has millions of years of experience to teach us a thing or two. <\/p>\n
